In 1979 I spent 6 weeks travelling Sudan. I knew little about the country, using it to transit to Egypt. So I arrived and asked the locals what to do. This led me to Darfur (the mountain of Jebel Mara and the beautiful Fur people), wrestling in Omdurman, the coral city of old Port Sudan, the Dinka people in the desert, eating kipda and foule, the Hadandowa people on the edge of what was then fighting for independence - Eritrea.
