North West Africa

map, watercolour, pen & pencil on canvas

My favourite part of the world I have explored. The poverty is overwhelmed by the joy, the noise, the colour, the music, the welcome, the sharing, the laughter.

I have used a sketch I made of a rug shop in a Kano (Nigeria) market and blended it with sketches and memories of other markets - Kumasi, Fez, Kpandu, Korhogo & more - to provide a blanket of individual ‘canvases’. Each hanging cloth represents a key visual from the area it covers - each folded cloth represents a pattern of printed wax fabric that I purchased along the way.

A vibrant life.
