Andrieu d‘Andres

acrylic, ink, marker, rope, fabric and found materials on multiple canvases

The Burghers of Calais tells the story of the siege of Calais in 1347, during the Hundred Years War. Surrounded for a year by English soldiers under King Edward III, six leading citizens of Calais, the Burghers, offered to die if Edward spared the rest of the town's people.

Andrieu was rechristened “the weeping burgher”. While most of the six showed strength, determination or forbearance, Andrieu let forth the passion and horror of his situation.
