Alice Under the Looking Glass

acrylic, pencil & objects on canvas and timber

When I was preparing this exhibition I was reminded this was a public space children frequented. I realised I hadn’t done any work specifically aimed at children for a long time, which was an immediate challenge to myself. Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass gave me enormous scope, and allowed me to draw on inspiration from animation heroes such as Hayao Miyazaki and Brian McEntee. (Cats Don’t Dance, Brave Little Toaster). As charming as Sir John Tenniel’s original designs are, they suffered from Disney’s version and I wanted to re-imagine Lewis Carroll’s ideas and provide an alternative view for kids today.

Included in the piece are the Walrus (along with a croquet mallet flamingo), the Knitting Sheep (Chapter 5, Book 2), the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter (and the Dodo), the White Rabbit (somewhat late), the Dormouse, Alice, the March Hare, Tweedledum & Tweedledee, and the most delightful Queen of Hearts.
